Alitalia's name derived from "Aerolinee Italiane Intternazionali". On the 16th September 1946 British European Airways (BEA) and the Italian government got together to form the Alitalia airlines company. Their first airflight was with a Fiat G-12 Alcione aircraft flying from Turin to Catania on the 5th of May 1947.
